In partnership with Raymond James, NYSSA's presents the 21st Annual Insurance Industry Conference.
For 2016, The SNL U.S. Insurance Index increased 17.3%, compared with 20.1% for the S&P 500 Financials index and 9.5% for the S&P 500. The top five best performing stocks in the SNL index in 2016 included: Health Insurance Innovations (HIIQ), WellCare Health Plans (WCG), MBIA Inc. (MBI), Ambac Financial Group (AMBC), and Trupanion (TRUP).
We’ve witnessed a shift towards Life insurance sector and away from non-life in the fall of 2016, due to rising interest rates. Through Sep. 1, 2016, the SNL U.S. Insurance L&H index was 2.11% YTD compared with 4.91% for the SNL U.S. Insurance P&C index. Since Oct. 1, however, the L&H index was up 23.8% through Mar. 8 compared with 15.3% for the P&C index. Given the long term nature of life policies, L&H stocks are more leveraged to interest rates.
We expect the non-life sector to face some headwinds in 2017 from the combination of intense pricing competition, lower favorable reserve development, and abundant excess capital. We expect the life sector to also face some headwinds in 2017, although less so than in 2016, as new premiums are invested at yields that are still below the current portfolio yield.
